About The Titans
Tennessee Oilers Owner/President K.S. "Bud" Adams Jr. was one of the
founding fathers of the AFL. (After the 1996 season, the Oilers moved
from Houston to Tennessee.) Billy Cannon, the Heisman Trophy winner
from Louisiana State, was the Oilers's and the AFL's first big-name
signing. In 1960 and 1961, Houston won back-to-back AFL titles. The
Oilers almost won a third straight title in 1962, but they lost a
thrilling, double-overtime game to the Dallas Texans, 20-17. At the
time, it was the longest professional football game ever played?77:54.
The Oilers have qualified for the playoffs 15 times in the franchise's
history. Since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970, Houston has reached the
playoffs 10 times, including its most recent appearance in 1994. But
the AFL championships the team won in the early 1960's are the only
league titles the Oilers have won.

Among the many coaches who have led successful Oilers teams were Lou
Rymkus, who guided them to their first championship in 1960 and
Wally Lemm, who coached the 1961 AFL title team. "Bum" Phillips led
the Oilers to three straight playoff appearances between 1979 and
1981, and between 1986 and 1989, Jerry Glanville took the Oilers to
the postseason three times. In 1991 and 1993, Jack Pardee led
Houston to its first division titles since the late 1960's.
Three former Oilers are now members of the Hall of Fame. The fabled
George Blanda, who played 26 years and was the Oilers' quarterback
from 1960 to 1966, was the first to be inducted in 1981. Ken
Houston, one of the game's great safeties, was elected in 1986 and
Earl Campbell, a pile-driving fullback from Texas, was picked in
1991.
In 1997 (8-8) and 1998 (8-8), Titans? head coach Jeff Fisher guided
a team that was in a state of transition and laid the groundwork for
the success that was to come. As the Titans arrived in Tennessee,
two young stars began to take control of the team as third-year
quarterback Steve McNair took over a starting role and second-year
running back Eddie George became a workhorse.
Building on the success the Titans had during the 1999 season would
be tough to accomplish, but Fisher followed the Tennessee Titans?
first AFC championship in 1999 with an AFC Central crown and the
league?s best record in 2000. It was the first time in
franchise history that the Titans/Oilers owned the NFL?s best record
(13-3) and only the third time the club won the AFC Central.
Maybe his best coaching job came in 2002. The Titans were poised to
rebound from a disappointing 2001 which was plagued by injury.
Tennessee got off to a 1-4 start and people on the outside began to
doubt, but Fisher kept the team on an even keel and rallied the
players to win 11 of the next 12 games, capture the AFC South title
and earn a place in the AFC Championship Game. Fisher recognized
that it would take time for the team to come together as nine new
starters became familiar with the "Titans Way" of football. The
Tennessee Titans thrived last season against the best teams, posting
an NFL-best (tied with Oakland) 6-2 mark against teams with a
winning record during the regular season.
Jeff Fisher is entering his 10th season in 2004 as head coach of the
Tennessee Titans and his fifth as Executive Vice President. Fisher
holds the franchise record for wins by a head coach with 93
victories and has amassed more regular season wins than any NFL head
coach over the last five seasons with 56. The Tennessee Titans
success over the last five years is unmatched by any coach in the
league. Fisher led the Titans to four playoff appearances (1999,
2000, 2002, 2003), two Division titles (2000 & 2002), two AFC
Championship Games (1999, 2002) and one Super Bowl berth (XXXIV). He
has presided over the most victorious (56 wins) and successful
five-year period in the franchise?s 44-year history.
2003 saw the Tennessee Titans reach the Divisional round of the
playoffs for the fourth time in five years after earning a Wild Card
berth with their 12-4 mark. Tennessee continued a tradition of great
play at home, posting a 7-1 record at the Coliseum. While the
defense ranked first against the run, the offense scored the second
most points in franchise history (435) and QB Steve McNair earned
NFL co-MVP honors.
