About The Texans
The Houston Texans introduced Dom Capers as their first head coach on
Jan. 21, 2001. In his first season with the Houston Texans, Capers
helped the Texans win four games, including a stunning season-opening
win over Dallas at Reliant Stadium. The Houston Texans became the
first expansion entry to win its regular season debut since the 1961
Vikings. The Texans later beat the Jaguars and two eventual playoff
teams, the Giants and the Steelers.
Even as they toil in arguably the league?s toughest division, success
for the Houston Texans is there for the taking, Capers knows it, and
is determined to keep his team?s focus.

The Houston Texans boast a young offense that has the potential to
be one of the best in the league. Texans? Quarterback David Carr
already has 29 starts under his belt at age 25. Second-year Texans
running back Domanick Davis is coming off a 1,000-yard season that
earned him NFL Rookie of the Year honors. Houston Texans? Wide
receiver Andre Johnson caught 66 passes for 976 yards as a rookie.
And Houston?s offensive line cut its sack total by 40 from 2002 to
2003.
The Houston Texans? defense still boasts two Pro Bowlers in
cornerback Aaron Glenn and defensive end Gary Walker. Texans?
Linebacker Jamie Sharper led the league in tackles in 2003 with 195,
while cornerback Marcus Coleman enjoyed a career season with seven
interceptions and 23 passes defended.
The Houston Texans finished their second season under head coach Dom
Capers 5-11, a modest one-game improvement from their 4-12 expansion
voyage. Modest, perhaps, on paper. But when you dissect the Houston
Texans? 2003 campaign, you come to the conclusion that Capers and
his staff produced a rather remarkable season. The Texans tied
Buffalo for the toughest schedule in the NFL. Houston?s opponents
boasted a .570 winning percentage and the Houston Texans played
seven games against playoff teams, including both Super Bowl XXXVIII
participants. Secondly, the Houston Texans battled a staggering
amount of attrition as 17 players landed on injured reserve,
including five opening day defensive starters.
Finally, 10 of Houston Texans? Sundays came down to the fourth
quarter and the Texans had a fourth-quarter lead in five of their 11
defeats. The Houston Texans upset NFC champion Carolina, kicked a
field goal to win at Miami and defeated Jacksonville on the game?s
final snap. The Texans also lost in overtime to Super Bowl champion
New England and dropped last-second heartbreakers to Tennessee and
Indianapolis. In short, what the Texans learned most in 2003 is that
the difference between a 5-11 season and an 11-5 season in today's
NFL is slight. The Texans now have to figure out how to bridge that
gap in 2004.
