About The Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded by Arthur J. Rooney on July 8,
1933 and are the sixth-oldest franchise in the NFL. The Pittsburgh
Steelers were known as the Pirates until 1940. In their first 40
years, the Steelers struggled without winning a title of any kind
until 1972 (when they finally won the AFC Central). Two years later,
after four decades of futility, Art Rooney and the Pittsburgh Steelers
took home the Vince Lombardi trophy as the winners of Super Bowl IX.
From 1957 to 1963, the Steelers, led by quarterback Bobby Layne,
defensive tackle Ernie Stautner and running back John Henry Johnson,
were legitimate division contenders. But the "dynasty years," which
coincided with the team's move to the AFC at the time of AFL-NFL
merger, were still a decade away. The Pittsburgh Steelers? first Super
Bowl win came a few years into one of the most incredible streaks in
sports history. From 1972 to 1979, the Steelers made the playoffs
eight consecutive years, won seven AFC Central titles and four AFC
championships. The Pittsburgh Steelers became the first team to win
four Super Bowls and the only team to win back-to-back Super Bowls
twice. The team of the decade of the 1970's became the first AFC team
to win its division 10 times since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

Pittsburgh Steelers? head coach Bill Cowher enters the 2004 season
as the longest tenured coach with one team in the NFL. The Steelers
head coach also has become one of the NFL?s most successful. In
Cowher?s 12 seasons, the Pittsburgh Steelers have captured seven
division titles, earned eight postseason playoff berths, advanced to
four AFC Championship games and made one Super Bowl appearance. He
is one of only six coaches in NFL history to claim at least seven
division titles.
After achieving great success in his first six seasons as the
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, the team experienced two subpar
seasons in 1998 and ?99, and a playoff-absent 2000 campaign. Many
predicted the same for the 2001 Steelers?or worse.
Cowher guided the Pittsburgh Steelers back to the postseason in 2001
after a three-year absence. Despite predictions to the contrary, the
Steelers captured its 15th AFC Central crown?the sixth under Cowher?and
posted an AFC best 13-3 regular-season record.
In 2002, Cowher led the Pittsburgh Steelers to the postseason.
Entering the season as heavy favorites for the Super Bowl, the
Steelers staggered to a 0-2 start and a 1-3 record. But, Cowher?s
intuitive change at starting quarterback?from Pro Bowl Kordell
Stewart to backup Tommy Maddox?sparked the Pittsburgh Steelers, who
won nine of their remaining 12 games to capture the first AFC North
Championship and compile a 10-5-1 record. The Pittsburgh Steelers
advanced to the AFC Divisional playoffs where they were defeated in
overtime to the host Tennessee Titans, 34-31.
