About The Saints
On November 1, 1966, the NFL awarded its 16th franchise to New
Orleans. It was All Saints Day and in January 1967, the team was named
the Saints.
Eager to create as much fan enthusiasm as possible in a city that
hadn't previously been exposed to pro football, the Saints obtained
three future Hall of Famers for their 1967 roster: Paul Hornung and
Jim Taylor (a Louisiana State grid hero) came from Green Bay, and
defensive end Doug Atkins came in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
The New Orleans Saints took "The City That Care Forgot" by storm. They
won five of their six preseason games. On September 17, 1967, they
opened the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams. Before a
packed house of 80,879 in Tulane Stadium, John Gilliam took the
opening kickoff and raced 94 yards for a touchdown. (The Rams went on
to win, 27-13.) A final-game victory over the Washington Redskins
allowed the Saints to match the 3-11 first-year record of both
Minnesota (1961) and Atlanta (1966).

The New Orleans Saints faltered year-after-year on the field. Still,
the Saints managed to thrill their fans with some exciting victories
and memorable moments. No doubt the most famous was Tom Dempsey's
last-second, NFL-record, 63-yard field goal in 1970 that carried New
Orleans over Detroit, 19-17. Outstanding players such as quarterback
Archie Manning, running back George Rogers, linebacker Rickey
Jackson, and place kicker Morten Andersen were integral to the
Saints and their march toward respectability.
In 1979 and 1983, the Saints finished 8-8. But it wasn't until 1987,
their 21st season, that the Saints had a winning year. That year,
under coach Jim Mora, the Saints were 12-3 and finished second in
the NFC West. Between 1987 and 1992, the Saints reached the playoffs
four times in six seasons, including 1991, when they won their lone
NFC West title.
A 22-year veteran of the NFL as a player and coach, Haslett was
hired as head coach by the New Orleans Saints on Feb. 3, 2000.
Haslett's 34 regular-season victories by the end of the 2003 season
ranks second in club history, trailing only Jim Mora's 93 wins from
1986-96. The New Orleans Saints have been defined by an attacking
defense and a hard-nosed offense during Haslett's tenure by posting
190 sacks over the last four seasons while averaging a robust 364
points.
Haslett led the New Orleans Saints to the NFC West title and a
playoff victory in 2000. The team put an exclamation point on an
eventful season with a 31-28 triumph over the St. Louis Rams on Dec.
30, 2000 to notch the first-ever playoff win in New Orleans. With
that victory, Haslett had led the New Orleans Saints to greater
heights in his first season than the previous 12 head coaches in
franchise history. Following that historic effort, Haslett was a
unanimous selection for NFL Coach of the Year.
Despite having 10 new starters in 2002, the New Orleans Saints
posted a 9-7 record that included a pair of memorable victories over
the Super Bowl XXXVII-Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. New Orleans led
the NFC with a team-record 432 points that season, while the special
teams emerged as one of the league's most opportunistic units.
Though his focus remains firmly on the future, the New Orleans
Saints' success over his first four seasons cannot be ignored. Never
has his gritty leadership and single-minded determination been more
evident than in 2003. With a roster full of inexperienced youngsters
and eight new starters sprinkled throughout the lineup, New Orleans
bounced back from a 1-4 start to win seven of the final 11 games.
Haslett held the Saints together during that difficult beginning to
keep the Saints in playoff contention until the 16th week of the
season, and of the team's final four defeats, three were by a
touchdown or less.
