About The Rockies
The story of the Colorado Rockies' 2004 season was the process of
getting to the future, which was painful at times as the Rockies
finished with their second-worst record over a 162-game season
(68-94). One key move was the trading of a significant Rockies figure
of the past, outfielder Larry Walker, to the St. Louis Cardinals on
Aug. 6. Meanwhile, the Colorado Rockies enjoyed head-turning work from
their pitching future, left-hander Jeff Francis.
The Rockies took an odd path to the fountain of youth. They spent last
winter collecting veterans, the most productive of which turned out to
be third baseman Vinny Castilla (a hero of the expansion Rockies of
the 1990s), shortstop Royce Clayton, outfielder Jeromy Burnitz and
left-handed pitcher Shawn Estes. The idea was twofold. The Rockies
hoped for a puncher's chance to be a surprise contender this year, and
needed the vets to give prospects time to develop. Injuries to Walker
(groin) and Rockies? center fielder Preston Wilson along with
disappointing work from the back of the Rockies? starting rotation --
factors that led to a 4-20 stretch in May and June -- scuttled that
plan early. The Rockies? bullpen, most notable for the unsuccessful
experiment of converting Shawn Chacon from starter to closer, set
single-season records for losses (39) and had the most blown saves
(34) for any team since 1999. Another All-Star season from Rockies?
first baseman Todd Helton could not cover for that.

However, the Rockies were able to quickly shift into youth mode.
Rockies? second baseman Aaron Miles led Major League rookies in hits
(153) and led National League rookies in batting average (.293).
Rockies? Matt Holliday, forced into the lineup because of the
outfield injuries, batted .290 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs in 121
games before his season ended with a hyperextended left elbow on
Sept. 12. Luis Gonzalez, a Rule 5 pick from Cleveland, displayed
power (.292, 12 HRs, 40 RBIs in 102 games) and versatility.
By season's end, Rockies? shortstop Clint Barmes and catcher J.D.
Closser had come up from Triple-A and staked claims on starting jobs
next year. Right-hander Chin-hui Tsao, last year's top prospect for
the Rockies, established mid-to-upper-90s velocity in a relief role
and could become the new closer.
Righty Scott Dohmann also flashed enough ability and had enough
success to be considered more than a trainee next year. Of the young
outfielders that got a shot late, versatile left-handed hitter Jorge
Piedra was the most ready. Garrett Atkins, the Triple-A Pacific
Coast League batting champ, could have a spot if he demonstrates he
can play the outfield as well as the corner infield spots.
The biggest development for the Colorado Rockies may have been young
starting pitching. Veteran Estes was the Rockies? clear leader.
Jason Jennings (11-12, 5.51 ERA) had five possible wins blown by the
bullpen and held Los Angeles to one run in eight innings in a
late-season game but left with the score tied. Joe Kennedy (9-7,
3.66 ERA), after struggling in Tampa Bay last year, was the Rockies'
best pitcher after returning from a July bout with shoulder
soreness. Righty Aaron Cook (6-4, 4.28 ERA) hit a streak where he
was the best of the bunch before blood clots in both lungs ended his
season in early August.
Then there's Francis, the Colorado Rockies? top 2002 pick out of the
University of British Columbia. Francis dominated in Double-A and
Triple-A to earn Baseball America and USA Today Minor League Player
of the Year honors, then offered more hope during his seven-start
trial.
