About The Reds
As the Cincinnati Reds entered their final game of the 2004 season,
the outlook for next year remains positive, but murky as the Ohio
River after a hard rain. Of course there's the usual list of free
agents and arbitration-eligible players for the Cincinnati Reds to
deal with.
For the Reds, there's also the Sean Casey situation. Without question,
Casey's been the Reds' most consistent position player at first base.
He entered the Reds? season finale against the Pirates hitting .323
with 24 home runs and 99 RBIs. He also started Sunday's contest amid
rumblings about being the Reds' top trade bait.

In recent weeks, conventional wisdom around water coolers says the
Cincinnati Reds need to move the oft-injured Ken Griffey Jr. to
first base in an attempt to keep him healthy for a full season. If
the Reds were deficient at first, the move might be a no-brainer.
Because of Reds? first baseman Sean Casey's popularity and
production, it's not.
On one hand, he's irreplaceable on the field, in the Reds? clubhouse
and the community. On the other, Wily Mo PenAs earned an opportunity
to play everyday and, after an All-Star season for the Cincinnati
Reds, Casey's value might never be higher.
Casey, however, understands the business of baseball. The most
difficult part of leaving the Cincinnati Reds would be that he's
seen the club make strides in '04 and is looking forward to being a
part of the Reds? turnaround process in '05. Since the decision
regarding his future with the Reds is out of his hands, he'll treat
the off season as usual.
