About The Ravens
After an 11-year absence, pro football returned to Baltimore in 1996.
The Ravens, a team that formerly played in Cleveland, moved into
Baltimore Memorial Stadium and began play in the 1996 season. "This is
a new beginning and a new era for us," Ravens owner Art Modell told
fans at the team's naming ceremony. (The name Ravens was inspired by
the poetry of former Baltimore resident Edgar Allan Poe.)
Although the team does indeed bring "a new era" of pro football to
Baltimore, the Ravens could avoid many of the "growing pains" a new
team typically endures. After all, they're not really a new team. Many
of the team's veterans played together in Cleveland.

Also returning to Baltimore in 1996 is the Ravens' coach Ted
Marchibroda, who led the Baltimore Colts from 1975 to 1979. In his
first year with the Colts, Marchibroda took a club that had posted a
2-12 mark in 1974 and engineered a 10-4 record in 1975. At that
time, it was the greatest one season turnaround in NF. It also
marked the first time in league history that a team went from last
to first in one season.
Brian Billick became the Ravens? head coach in 1999 after the new
franchise had produced consecutive seasons of 4-12 (1996), 6-9-1
(1997) and 6-10 (1998). Billick quickly changed the course of the
Baltimore Ravens, producing an 8-8 mark in his first season (1999).
Year two (2000) resulted in a 12-4 regular season mark and a sweep
through the playoffs to the Super Bowl XXXV championship. In 2001,
with a spate of injuries to important contributors, his team battled
to a 10-6 mark, earned a Wild Card berth and advanced to the
Divisional Playoff round.
Under Billick, the Baltimore Ravens have always been a team that
features an outstanding defense, an offense that runs the ball
effectively, and special teams that are scrappy. Reflecting his
hard-nosed, competitive zeal, his Baltimore Ravens teams are noted
for their physical, tough style, and they are well conditioned.
Above all, Brian?s Ravens teams are ready for the playoff runs of
November and December. Only Tennessee (31-11), Philadelphia (30-11)
and St. Louis (29-13) have better records over the season?s last two
months than Billick?s Ravens (28-13). (Records are from 1999,
Brian?s first season in Baltimore, through 2003.)
Billick has clearly demonstrated an ability totake NFL players to
the highest levels of achievement. There?s the Super Bowl victory
following the 2000 season for the Baltimore Ravens, along with his
other successes in his five seasons as head coach. And there are the
numbers, offensively and defensively: in 1998, Billick coordinated a
Vikings? offense that scored the most points in NFL history (556);
and the 2000 Ravens? defense set the NFL?s 16-game standard for
fewest points allowed (165). (Prior to Billick?s arrival in
Baltimore in 1999, the Ravens? defense had been ranked no higher
than 22nd in the league over the team?s first three seasons. In each
of Coach Billick?s first three years as the Ravens? head coach,
Baltimore?s defense ranked second in the league. In the 2003 season,
the defense finished third-best in the league.)
