About The Rangers
The Texas Rangers ended their 2004 season
Sunday and thereby interrupted a work in progress. "To be continued,"
Rangers manager Buck Showalter said.
In the first year of the post-Alex Rodriguez era, the Texas Rangers
were the surprise story of Major League Baseball, winning 89 games and
competing with Oakland and Anaheim for a division title until the
final week of the season. Coming close didn't fully satisfy the Texas
Rangers, who will watch this week's playoffs with a bittersweet
feeling.
"There's definitely something to build on," Rangers shortstop Michael
Young said. "Right now, we all need some time to recharge our
batteries. But we're looking forward to next year because we know
we've got a chance to be a better Rangers team than we were this year.
"Yeah, it's a little disappointing that the Rangers didn't get to the
playoffs. But this is the most fun I've had playing baseball in the
Major Leagues. This is why I play baseball, to be in situations like I
was in this year with the Rangers. When Spring Training rolls around,
we're going to have a great deal of optimism."

Rangers? third baseman Hank Blalock will remember the camaraderie of
a team with a talented young nucleus and Rangers veteran role
players sprinkled around them.
Where do the Rangers go from here? Rangers? Owner Tom Hicks, general
manager John Hart and Showalter will be in meetings next week to
plot a course for the 2005 Texas Rangers.
At first base for the Texas Rangers, Mark Teixeira is coming off a
robust offensive season. One way or the other, Teixeira will be a
fixture in the Rangers? lineup. Rangers? second baseman Alfonso
Soriano has been rumored as a trade possibility, but the Rangers
plan as of now is for Soriano to be back in Texas for a second
season. Young and Blalock are set at shortstop and third base for
the Texas Rangers, but Showalter said the club will explore the best
way to get some infield insurance.
Another area where the Rangers want to upgrade is in the designated
hitter spot. "We're going to look to add a couple of bats and the
pitching is always something you are going to focus on," Showalter
said.
At catcher, the Rangers face some unknowns concerning Gerald Laird,
who started the year in impressive fashion but wasn't the same after
injury. Rod Barajas picked the Rangers up and will be in the mix for
next year. The Rangers may look to protect themselves by signing a
catcher.
