Only mounting injuries in the starting rotation prevented the Pirates from improving their record for the third consecutive year. The development of several young Pirates? players, who were given the opportunity to play regularly, was perhaps even more important than the final tally of wins and losses. The Pirates discovered an ace in Oliver Perez, a budding star in Jason Bay and a potential future closer in Mike Gonzalez. Several other inexperienced Pirates players showed that they could compete in Majors.

For the first time recent memory, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a core group of young talent to build around. "This has been an enormous year for their development," said Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon. "They are going to be even better next year."
