About The Panthers
On October 26, 1993, after six years of hopeful anticipation, the
Carolina Panthers were awarded an NFL expansion franchise. Owner Jerry
Richardson's dream started on July 16, 1987, when he met in Charlotte
with a group of interested parties to discuss the feasibility of
entering the multi-city competition for two NFL expansion franchises.
The Panthers played their first-ever game in Canton, Ohio, in the
annual Hall of Fame Game. Their opponent was the NFL's other expansion
franchise, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Panthers came away with a
20-14 victory, and it was apparent that both teams had benefited
immensely from the NFL's expansion draft and the free-agent market. In
short, it was clear that both teams were ready to compete in the NFL.
The Panthers not only were competitive, but they established an NFL
record for most wins by an expansion team when they finished 7-9. The
team improved dramatically in its second season, winning the NFC West
with a 12-4 record and advancing to the NFC Championship Game.

In January of 2002, head coach John Fox inherited a Carolina
Panthers team coming off a 1-15 season. The Panthers had finished
last in defense and next-to-last in offense in addition to having
salary cap problems. There also was a confidence crisis amongst the
Carolina Panthers players after losing a League record 15 straight
games in one season. During his first three seasons, the Panthers
have gone from 1-15 to 7-9 to 11-5, an improvement of 10 regular
season games, 13 counting playoffs. The 11-5 mark for the Carolina
Panthers 2004 season was good enough to win the NFC South, giving
Carolina its first division title since 1996. However, the division
championship would prove just to be a start.
Hosting the NFC Wild Card game against Dallas, the Carolina Panthers
won convincingly 29-10, accumulating 380 yards against the NFL's
top-ranked defense. A week later, the Carolina Panthers played the
fifth longest game in NFL history, topping the Rams 29-23 in the
second overtime to stop a 14-game home winning streak by St. Louis.
John Fox then took the Panthers on the road again, defeating
Philadelphia in the NFC Championship game. In the Super Bowl, the
upstart Carolina Panthers, a consensus preseason pick for to finish
last in their division, came within seconds of winning.
After going 3-16 in games decided by three points or less from
1999-2002, the Panthers tied an NFL record with seven victories by
three points or less in 2003. Seven times the Carolina Panthers
drove for the game winning score in overtime or with less than two
minutes remaining in regulation during the regular season.
The Carolina defense is now not only one of the League's best; the
Panthers? defense is one of the youngest. Peppers was a consensus
choice as NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Carolina Panthers
and has 19 sacks in two seasons. Third-year Panthers tackle Kris
Jenkins has been named first-team All-Pro by The Associated Press
and has played in the Pro Bowl two straight years. Panthers players
Mike Rucker is coming off a Pro Bowl season, and Will Witherspoon
and Dan Morgan are highly regarded young linebackers.
