About The Padres

The Padres' new ballpark was supposed to provide the club with a distinct home field advantage, but for whatever reason, it didn't quite work out that way in its inaugural season. PETCO Park was a runaway winner at the gate, as the Padres drew more than 3 million fans for the first time, including a record crowd of 45,389 in the Padres season finale against the Giants on Thursday. But the San Diego Padres were less successful on the field, posting just a 42-39 home mark on the season.

"The Padres got better here at the ballpark, but I was disappointed our record was not better here," Padres? manager Bruce Bochy said. "I think that is probably the biggest reason the Padres weren?t sitting in a better situation, because of their home record. I think the Padres players have been acclimated to it. It's been accepted that this is our home, and they started playing like it."

The Padres came out of the gate quickly, winning their first series at PETCO and three of their first four to post a 10-4 mark in April, but they slumped to just three Padres wins in May. After winning seven games in June, the Padres matched their season high with 10 wins at home in July before dropping to three home wins in August. Aided by a sweep of the Diamondbacks in the second to last home series, the San Diego Padres finished with nine home wins in September.

That wasn't the intention of a baseball-only park for the San Diego Padres that was designed to be more pitcher- than hitter-friendly, but ultimately fair. The larger dimensions -- 411 feet and 402 feet to the right- and left-center gaps respectively -- presented new challenges to the Padres offensively, and the ball didn't carry particularly well given the park's proximity to the harbor.

By midseason, the Padres players began to adjust, but the club never quite found its winning edge at home, and many feel that the factor contributed to their place in the standings.
