About The Packers
The incredible saga of the Green Bay Packers began in August 1919,
when the Indian Packing Company agreed to sponsor a local pro football
team under the direction of Earl (Curly) Lambeau. In 1921, the Green
Bay Packers were granted a membership in the new National Football
League and rank as the third-oldest team in pro football. In its
storied existence, the Green Bay Packers? franchise has enjoyed both
periods of great success and terrible failure.
There have been many great Green Bay Packers football players, but it
is two of the team's coaches, Lambeau and Vince Lombardi, who rank as
the most dominant figures in the Packers's history. Together, Lambeau
and Lombardi brought the Packers 11 NFL championships (including three
straight twice, in 1929, 1930 and 1931 and 1965, 1966 and 1967). The
last three titles came at the end of the Packers's domination in the
1960's, which began with Green Bay winning championships in 1961 and
1962.

Lambeau and Lombardi and 17 other long-time Packers players are
enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Among them is Don Hutson, the game's
first great receiver, as well as Arnie Herber, Clarke Hinkle, Cal
Hubbard, John (Blood) McNally, Mike Michalske and Tony Canadeo. The
great Packers teams of the 1960's produced Hall of Famers like Jim
Taylor, Forrest Gregg, Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke, Herb Adderley,
Willie Davis, Jim Ringo, Paul Hornung, Willie Wood and Henry Jordan.
Green Bay is a city of less than 100,000 and is viewed as a relative
sports dinosaur because it is the last remaining small city in the
big-city world of major professional sports. Green Bay is unique in
another way?the team is the only community-owned, non-profit
organization in the NFL.
Mike Holmgren had one of the most successful coaching stints in
league history as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from
1992-98 that included a 75-37 (.670) regular season record, a 9-5
(.643) postseason mark, and two Green Bay Packers Super Bowl
appearances, including a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots
in Super Bowl XXXI played in New Orleans. By leading the Green Bay
Packers to win at least one game in five consecutive postseasons
(1993-97) Holmgren joined John Madden (1973-77) as the only coaches
in league history to accomplish the feat. From 1995-98, Holmgren's
Green Bay Packers posted an NFL-best 48-16 (.762) record, finished
first in the NFC Central Division three times, second once and
posted a 7-3 mark in the playoffs.
By taking the Green Bay Packers to six consecutive postseasons
(1993-98), Holmgren established a Packers franchise record, with a
team that had recorded just two winning seasons in the 19 years
before he was hired.
Mike Sherman was named the 13th head coach in Green Bay Packers
history on January 18, 2000. In a relatively short period with the
Green Bay Packers, Sherman already has experienced a great deal of
success with four straight winning seasons and back-to-back division
titles the past two years. Winning games at better than a two-to-one
ratio, Sherman and the Packers have put together an impressive 43-21
regular-season record since 2000. From solely the Packers?
perspective, Sherman is one of just four head coaches (of 13 total)
in Green Bay Packers franchise history to hold a winning career
mark, joining Hall of Famers Curly Lambeau and Vince Lombardi along
with Super Bowl-victor Mike Holmgren.
