About The Orioles
In what was obvious inside the Baltimore
Orioles organization but not outside, the Orioles announced Sunday
that Lee Mazzilli will return for a second year as manager.
Baltimore Orioles? Vice President Mike Flanagan revealed to the
Baltimore Sun on Saturday that Mazzilli would return while Orioles?
executive vice president Jim Beattie and Mazzilli confirmed that the
former New York Yankees coach will be back for at least 2005.
The Orioles entered Sunday's game with the Red Sox 40-36 in the second
half and recovered from a 12-game losing streak in August to make a
legitimate run at a .500 record. The club is on its way to its best
record since 1999, when the O's were 78-84.

"The second half was a little more fun," Baltimore Orioles? Vice
President Jim Beattie said. "The Orioles? players went out there and
they had goal. They had some goals of trying to improve as a team.
This time of the year you get a lot of players playing for
themselves, but I think you saw our Orioles? players playing as a
team and trying to win ballgames."
Mazzilli had been uncomfortable talking about Baltimore Orioles team
plans for next year until recently. According to a team source,
Mazzilli had not met Baltimore Orioles? owner Peter Angelos
face-to-face until last month and it was Angelos who was
apprehensive about bringing Mazzilli back. Mazzilli has led the
Orioles to a seven-game improvement over 2003 and the club went
18-10 in September, its first winning September in five years. He is
signed to a two-year contract with two one-year options.
"I knew for a while," Mazzilli said. "And, hopefully, I will stay
two more years after that. Right now we're on the right track. We
have learned a lot this year and I think the Orioles are headed in
the right direction. We just need to make some changes."
Beattie and Mazzilli said the Orioles need more quality starting
pitching and a productive right-handed bat to complement the lefties
in the lineup.
"I think our ultimate goal is for me to be standing here next year
with a couple of more games to play," Beattie said. "I would say we
are close. We have laid out a variety of scenarios already whereby
looking at free agents or potential trade players we have fitting in
a potential trade for the Orioles. It's all about resources and
going out to get players for next year."
Tejada named Baltimore Orioles MVP: After an amazing first season,
Miguel Tejada was named the 2004 Most Valuable Baltimore Oriole by
the media that covers the team on a regular basis. Tejada entered
Sunday with 34 home runs, 149 RBIs and career highs in on-base
percentage and slugging percentage.
