About The NY Giants
The only thing predictable about the NY 2004 Giants' defense is that
it has been unpredictable. Just ask Brett Favre and the Green Bay
Packers -- the latest victims of NY Giants defensive coordinator Tim
Lewis' ever-changing scheme. Or talk to the NY Giants, who were
confused themselves one day after their 14-7 victory.
"From the back end, we didn't change up a whole lot. Well, actually we
did," NY Giants free safety Brent Alexander said. "We mixed it up a
lot. It's hard to put your finger on one thing. We ran a variety of
things and we didn't run any of them more than twice."

Instead of the NY Giants blitzing attack Lewis had unleashed against
the team's past two opponents, the NY Giants opted for a more
passive approach against the Packers. That resulted in zero sacks,
but plenty of confusion for Favre and backup quarterback Doug
Pederson. "I mentioned to you last week that when you prepare for
the Packers, you have a whole gamut of personnel combinations that
you have to work with," NY Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, "because
they will provide four wide receivers and then use a tackle as a
tight end as well. So all of those things caused the NY Giants to
prepare in many ways different packages for them and we used a few
different packages on third down."
What opposing teams can learn by studying films of the NY Giants'
defense is they can expect anything but what they've already seen.
One week, Lewis will try to create pressure up the middle by
blitzing his linebackers and dropping NY Giants? defensive ends into
coverage. The next Sunday, there might only be the occasional
pressure from the outside rusher, such as NY Giants? linebacker
Carlos Emmons or NY Giants? strong safety Gibril Wilson.
Some of the recent NY Giants changes Lewis made weren't necessarily
planned, though. Season-ending injuries to NY Giants? safeties Omar
Stoutmire and Shaun Williams and the return of cornerback Frank
Walker from a broken foot forced Lewis to shuffle and reshuffle the
personnel in obvious passing situations. NY Giants cornerback Terry
Cousin, who usually lines up on the slot receiver, was the safety in
the team's dime package on Sunday. The eighth-year veteran said it
was the first time he had played the position since his freshman
year at South Carolina.
It was an extremely fortunate move for Cousin, who grabbed his first
interception of the season with the NY Giants when a pass deflected
off Packers wide receiver Donald Driver and into his hands. Cousin
moved into the deep position because Wilson, who became the starting
NY Giants strong safety when Williams tore cartilage in his left
knee on Sept. 24, lined up closer to the line of scrimmage.
Undoubtedly the plan will morph into something completely different
before the NY Giants travel to Dallas for their next game. Waiting
there will be quarterback Vinny Testaverde, the 40-year-old former
Jet, Raven, Brown and Buccaneer, who has faced all kinds of
defensive attacks. Surely, Lewis can't possibly concoct a scheme
that the 18-year veteran hasn't seen. Or can he? Michael Strahan
thinks he can. If he doesn't confuse his own players first.
