The men's NCAA Final Four represents the highest level of collegiate basketball competition in North America. It begins with a bracket of 65 men's college basketball teams from the Division I NCAA schools in the United States which compete in a tournament. The team with the best conference record for each of the 31 division I conferences all receive one automatic bid to the tournament that ultimately leads to the Final Four. In addition to the 31 teams that receive automatic bids, the Final Four committee selects 34 "at-large" teams to compete in the NCAA basketball tournament.

The two college basketball teams seeded 64 and 65 play in an opening round game the Tuesday before the first-round games of the NCAA tournmanet. The winner of this game moves into the championship bracket as a No. 16 seed. The first round consists of 32 games pitting two teams against one another. 32 teams emerge victorious from their first round games and move on to the second round of the tournament. The second round of the college basketball tournament then places the remaining 32 teams into 16 head to head games to whittle the tournament down to what is referred to as the sweet sixteen. The sweet sixteen teams begin a third round playing further into the bracket to divide in half the number of teams who will move on to the next round of the NCAA tournament and emerge as the elite eight. After the four games are played to determine who moves on to the fifth and final round, the four winning teams move on to compete head to head in the final three games of the tournament in what is then known as the NCAA Final Four.
