In its second year in downtown Detroit's Ford Field, the Motor City Bowl featured a match up of explosive offenses and the bowl's first Big Ten competitor in 2003.

The 10-3 Bowling Green Falcons were riding a #23 BCS national ranking and a season that produced wins over bowl-bound Purdue and then-undefeated & 15th ranked Northern Illinois. The Big Ten's Northwestern Wildcats were fresh off a season that produced wins over bowl-bound Kansas and Wisconsin, and a streak of four wins in its last six games.
The lead in this see-saw affair remained unchanged until Bowling Green mounted an inspired 11-play, 67-yard drive that culminated with just 4:06 left on the game clock. With the game in the balance, Cole Magner caught yet another Josh Harris touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone. The Motor City Bowl ended with that score.

The MAC West Champion Bowling Green Falcons had claimed a 28 - 24 victory, and finished their season 11-3, ranked in both the writers and coaches polls, and the 2003 Motor City Bowl champions.
