About Motley Crue
The band that would become Motley Crue got it?s start in 1981 when
two musicians, Nikki Sixx, a bassist, and Tommy Lee, a drummer,
combined forced and started a new project. Mick Mars, a skilled
guitarist, was added to the newly formed group as was front man Vince
Neil soon after.
It was the perfect time for heavy metal on the L.A. music scene. The
band whom Mars named "Motley Krue" after his former band was called a
"motley crew" by a critic, had dreams as big as their hair, and 1980s
California was the perfect place to pursue them.
The Sunset Strip was the breeding ground for metal groups looking to
get discovered. The popular area would become home to groups such as
Poison, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Scorpions, W.A.S.P. and the joke known as
Cinderella. Despite this, Motley started it all. Once Motley Crue
released their first album, Too Fast For Love on their own Lethur
Records and found success, L.A. bands were signed left and right.
After the success of Too Fast For Love , which sold 20,000 copies in
1981, the Motley Crue was offered a deal on Elektra Records in 1983,
and released their sophomore album Shout at the Devil, also a success.
During the midst of Motley?s newfound success, a tragedy hit during
one of Motley Crue's many house parties. The night was young and the
hot spot for L.A. partygoers was the Motley house. The party was
raging, but out of beer, an essential element. Vince, though
intoxicated, got behind the wheel with pal Nicholas Dingley of L.A.
band Hanoi Rocks, and headed out.
The trip didn?t end on a happy note. Neil slammed into the side of an
oncoming car, killing good friend Dingley. The other party emerged
from the incident with broken bones and mild brain damage. Vince was
devastated. Vince went to court in 1985 and was slapped with a
vehicular manslaughter charge as well as driving while intoxicated. He
was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 200 hours of community service and a
fee of $2.6 million.
In the middle of the chaos, Motley Crue had finally made it to the
top. Before Vince was sentenced, Crue had their first Top 40 hit off
of their album Theatre of Pain, "Smokin? in the Boys? Room".
After a short break in ?85 (during Vince?s legal troubles) Motley Crue
released their music video to the single "Home Sweet Home", which was
a ballad from Theatre. "Home" became one of the first of many "power
ballads" of the ?80s, and influenced metal bands to show their softer
side, with later songs like Poison?s "Every Rose Has It?s Thorn" and
White Snake?s "Is This Love".
While Motley Crue enjoyed the success of their hit album, Tommy Lee
tied the knot. He wed "T.J. Hooker" (and soon to be "Melrose Place")
star Heather Locklear.
1987 brought great success to Motley Crue with their fourth album,
Girl, Girls, Girls. The video for the title track was banned from MTV
because of its content, and the song became the anthem for strippers
everywhere?something the guys were proud of.
Motley Crue set out on their first world tour. All was going well
until the European leg of the tour was cancelled?because Nikki was
dead.

With the success of their albums, the members of Motley Crue could
afford everything they?d ever dreamed of. Their world was overflowing
with wild parties, booze, porn stores, strip joints and the
inevitable?drugs. All members of Motley Crue dabbed in drugs, but
Nikki was struggling with a mean heroin addiction in the mid ?80s. One
night (while on tour allegedly), Nikki shot his arm full of an
extremely large dose of heroin. It was lethal.
Nikki had officially left his body when the paramedics shot him full
of adrenaline in the hospital. Sixx was revived, and he and his band
members were advised to kick drugs together. The band took a year off
in ?88 and proceeded to go through rehab.
Motley Crue emerged clean and sober in 1989, and released their best
album to date, Dr. Feelgood. It went to #1 on the Billboard charts,
and spawned hits such as "Dr. Feelgood" their first top 10 single, "Kickstart
My Heart", "Don?t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" and "Without You".
Motley Crue enjoyed the hits for a year or so, and in 1991, they
released a compilation album entitled "Decade of Decadence" in
celebration of the band?s ten year anniversary. The early ?90s also
brought the creation of their own label, Motley Records. But through
the success, drama found it?s way in somehow.
Although Motley Crue had a few hit records under their studded belts,
times were changing and so was music style. The "good times" party
metal was left back in the ?80s, and Seattle-based grunge acts like
Nirvana and Pearl Jam were coming into their fullest. Motley Crue
began to stress about their dilemma and soon, tension was in the air,
especially from Vince. Fights broke out among the other band members,
and arguments with singer became too much on top of the changing
times. Neil was fired in 1992.
John Corabi replaced Neil and released the self-titled "Motley Crue"
record in 1994. It reached #7 on the charts and went gold, but was a
disappointment among critics, as well as long-time Motley Crue fans.
This bad album also had a bad tour to go with it. The band?s start
with Corabi was a rocky one.
During this time, Vince Neil began to release solo albums. During the
release of his second record "Carved In Stone", his life took a tragic
turn when his young daughter Skylar died of stomach cancer. In honor
of his beloved daughter, Vince began to hold an annual charity golf
tournament for children in need, which still continues to this day.
The newly formed band released another flop album and stayed together
until 1997, when Vince Neil was recruited back to the group. Although
the band and Motley Crue fans were glad to have Neil back, their
reunion album "Generation Swine" was what some in the music community
would refer to as a "stinker".
1998 brought more trouble for the band. Tommy Lee?s marriage to
actress Pamela Anderson was going down the tubes. That year, Lee was
accused and arrested for spousal abuse, and was sent to jail for most
of the year.
After this ordeal, Motley Crue?s longtime record deal with Elektra
came crashing down, and Vince?s relationship with Tommy was becoming
more frail than ever. Lee couldn?t take the fighting anymore and left
the band to form a new band called "Methods of Mayhem".
Lee was replaced by drummer Randy Castillo and released "New Tattoo"
with the band in 2000. The tour for the album proved to be a hard one
for Castillo, who left the tour due to an undisclosed illness. He was
replaced on the rest of the tour by former Hole drummer Samantha
Maloney.
Randy Castillo died of cancer in 2002. The rest of the band went on a
hiatus. A year later, Nikki brought up the idea of reuniting the
original band members for a farewell tour. Tommy said no, due to his
fickle relationship with Vince.
The guys continued to do their own thing. Vince?s wife Heidi accused
him of spousal abuse. Vince was also kicked off a radio show for being
intoxicated.
Since then, the band has reunited for a 2005 tour starting in
February.
