About The Mets
The New York Mets' season was marked by injuries and inconsistencies
yet again in 2004. Unlike 2003, there was no grace period for New York
Mets? manager Art Howe or Mets? general manager Jim Duquette, who were
both relieved of their duties as New York and Montreal closed out the
regular season on 10/3/04.
The loss of New York Mets? players Jose Reyes, Kaz Matsui, Mike
Piazza, Cliff Floyd, Mike Cameron and on and on was just too much for
the Mets to overcome. Though the New York Mets were in the thick of
the National League East Division and Wild Card races as July drew to
a close, the damage caused by losing Reyes and Matsui for much of
August proved to be irreparable. Throw in a season-ending injury to
Mets? Victor Zambrano and the car accident that cost Tom Glavine a
start -- and seemingly much of his command -- and the Mets began a
slide from which they could not recover.

Still, there was some promise to the New York Mets? season. When
healthy, Reyes and Matsui were potent at the top of the order. David
Wright emerged as one of the bright young stars in the National
League, and Braden Looper was dominant as a closer.
The crop of youngsters that the New York Mets have assembled,
combined with what is expected to be another veteran starting staff,
has management optimistic that (barring more injuries) 2005 should
be a more competitive and complete season.
New York Mets 2004 Record: 71-91, fourth in NL East.
