The biggest victories for the Memphis Grizzlies this season came off the court. The electric combination of Shane Battier and Pau Gasol gave Memphis Grizzlies fans many reasons to cheer. In 2002 Battier became the first rookie to receive the NBA Assist Award for outstanding community service and Pau Gasol took home the prestigious Rookie of the Year honor.

West wasted no time in 2003 getting a solid young core of players mixed with just the right amount of veteran leadership. 

The Memphis Grizzlies took a positive leap back to the future when Hubert (Hubie) Jude Brown, one of the premier basketball minds in the business, returned from retirement as an NBA head coach to become the Grizzlies? sixth head coach on November 12, 2002. Brown, 70, returns to coaching after leading the New York Knicks to two playoff appearances during five seasons (1982-87) and the Atlanta Hawks to three playoff appearances in five seasons (?76-81) and spending the last 15 years teaching coaching clinics and serving as an NBA broadcast analyst for three television networks. After winning NBA coach of the year honors in 1976, Brown made a huge impact on the young Grizzlies. Brown led them to not only the best record in franchise history, but its first playoff appearance as well as 2004 NBA Coach of the Year honors.

With a little more experience under their belts, Shane Battier and Pau Gasol will be a big part of improving the Memphis Grizzlies future.
