About The Mariners
After winning 393 games the previous four seasons and reaching the
playoffs twice, the Mariners were expected to have another
playoff-contending season in 2004.
But the Mariners stumbled out of the starting gate with five losses
and spent the entire season in the American League West cellar.
Pitching, defense and clutch hitting, the key ingredients in the
Seattle Mariners? recent success, was supposed to proceed without a
hitch.
The Mariners? starting rotation, which
became the first group of starters since the 1966 Dodgers to start all
162 games, returned intact and figured to be just as dependable, even
if they didn't start every game again. But a combination of poor
performances, lack of offensive production from the middle of the
Mariners? lineup, and a weakened defense presented problems. Every
Mariners? starter won at least 11 games in 2003. None of them won as
many as 10 games in 2004.

But there is hope down the road for the Seattle Mariners.
Left-hander Bobby Madritsch, two years removed from playing in
obscurity in the independent Northern League, emerged as potential
big-time pitcher for the Mariners next season. Right-hander Ryan
Franklin is due more offensive support and right-hander Gil Meche
pitched as well in the second half as the Mariners expected him to
pitch all season.
The first three games of the season usually aren't the most
important games of the season, but that was the case for the 2004
Seattle Mariners. They came out of Spring Training full of
confidence and proceeded to get swept by the Angels in a three-game
series at Safeco Field, getting outscored 25-13. The Mariners never
recovered from that series.
As the Texas Rangers demonstrated in the 2004 season, going from
last place to contender almost overnight is possible if the front
office makes the right moves. The Seattle Mariners must beef up the
middle of the lineup and sign a run producer.
Seattle Mariners 2004 Record: 63-99, fourth in AL West
