About The Lions
The 1920's saw three separate failing attempts to establish a pro
football team in Detroit. In 1934, the "new" game took hold in the
city when Detroit radio executive George A. Richards purchased the
Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans for the then-astounding sum of $8,000 and
moved the franchise to the Motor City.
The Spartans joined the NFL in 1930. In 1932, they played in one of
history's most pivotal games, a hastily-scheduled championship game
against the Chicago Bears. As a result of that game, three major rules
were changed, the league was divided into two divisions and an annual
NFL title showdown was established.
Unlike previous Detroit teams, the Lions were loaded with some of the
finest players of the day. The team leader was Dutch Clark, a
triple-threat star (and the last NFL drop kicker) who became a charter
member of the Hall of Fame. Playing in the University of Detroit
Stadium, the Lions won the NFL championship in 1935, their second
year. Those early successes firmly established pro football in Detroit
and for more than 70 years the sport has been an integral part of the
Michigan sports scene.

The Lions enjoyed their finest years in the 1950's, when they won
four division titles and three league championships (in 1952, 1953
and 1957). Among the stars on those teams were such future Hall of
Famers as quarterback Bobby Layne, running back Doak Walker,
tackle-guard Lou Creekmur and safety Jack Christiansen.
The Lions have been looking for their fourth title for more than 40
years. While they've had great players?such as Joe Schmidt, Yale
Lary, Lem Barney and Dick "Night Train" Lane, each of whom has been
elected to the Hall of Fame?the best the Lions could do was squeak
into the playoffs as a wildcard team in 1970 and 1982.
The Lions finally ended their drought by winning the NFC Central in
1983. Paced by superstar running back Barry Sanders, the Lions'
all-time rushing leader, Detroit also won division titles in 1991
and 1993. In 1991, the Lions won their first playoff games since
1957 and made their way to the NFC championship game for the first
time in franchise history.
The Detroit Lions hired Steve Mariucci as their head coach in 2003.
One of the first steps to building a winner in the National Football
League involves establishing home field advantage, and Steve
Mariucci did just that last year as the Lions compiled a 5-3 record
at Ford Field during his first season as head coach in Detroit. The
5-3 mark was the best home field record by the Lions since 1999.
Mariucci?s first season with the Detroit Lions was highlighted by
the additions and improvements of several key players. On the Lions?
defense, CB Dr? Bly was the only player in the league to be selected
to the Pro Bowl who was signed as an unrestricted free agent last
year. Along with Bly on defense, the Lions added young players with
bright futures, including outside linebacker Boss Bailey, defensive
linemen Cory Redding and safety Terrence Holt. Up front, Shaun
Rogers continued to develop into a force at defensive tackle,
earning an alternate Pro Bowl nod, and he was joined in the middle
with free agent acquisition Dan Wilkinson.
On the Detroit Lions offense, second-year quarterback Joey
Harrington continued to improve as the Lions? signal caller. Among
first or second-year quarterbacks, Harrington was the leader in
touchdown passes, passing yards, completions and attempts. Of those
quarterbacks, he was the only player to start and play in every
game. Harrington?s 17 touchdown tosses were the most by a Detroit
Lions? quarterback since 1997.
In April of 2004, the Detroit Lions amassed a draft class that was
considered one of the best in the entire NFL by several national
media outlets. In the first round, the Lions traded down one
position and picked wide receiver Roy Williams with the seventh
overall pick. By trading down and capturing an additional second
round pick, the Detroit Lions then traded back into the first round
to take running back Kevin Jones. Williams and Jones, who many
considered to be the top prospect at each of their positions, will
add speed and play-making ability to the Detroit Lions offense. The
Lions then selected one of the best linebackers in the draft in
Teddy Lehman, who will also add speed to the team?s defense.
