About Lenny Kravitz
There may have been other retro rock artists before Lenny Kravitz
came along, but he was one of the first to not be stereotyped to a
certain style as he?s tested such genres as soul, reggae, hard rock,
funk, folk, ballads and psychedelic over the years. Born to actress
Roxie Roker of the Jeffersons and a television producer father in New
York on May 26, 1964, Kravitz was raised in Los Angeles, where he
found himself in the midst of musical talent as a youngster due to his
parents? friendships with the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis,
Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Bobby Short, and among
others. Kravitz was a member of the California Boys Choir until the
age of 14, when he decided to pursue a rock and roll career while in
high school and under the impression of a funk rocker by the name of
Prince. Kravitz?s admiration of Prince was so large, that he started
his first works by patterning them directly after him, and shortly
became known as ?Romeo Blue?, complete with blue contact lenses.
Unfortunately, as Romeo Blue, Kravitz failed to land a recording deal.
Kravitz decided to relocate back to New York City in the late ?80s,
where one of his roommates turned out to be actress, Lisa Bonet of
Cosby Show fame. They fell in love and eventually became married.
During this time, Kravitz wisely discarded is Prince approach and
looked back to suck classic rockers as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin,
Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, The Beatles, and Curtis Mayfield for
inspiration. During this time, Kravitz found a lifelong friend in
engineer Henry Hirsch who as it turns out, stuck by Kravitz throughout
his career. His style was quite refreshing with this new
?back-to-basics? approach in the gaudy era of the late ?80s and he
soon landed a recording contract with Virgin Records and issued his
debut release, Let Love Rule in 1989. Kravitz?s debute proved to be a
surprise hit due to the success of the title track, which quickly
became a hit single both on the radio and MTV. A few pessimistic
critics were quick to report that Kravitz?s retro look and sound were
simply a ploy to get the public?s attention. However, in the 1990s, it
had become integrated into the mainstream, both musically and
fashion-wise, proving that Kravitz was a successful trendsetter.
Around this same time, Lenny wrote a major hit single, not for
himself, but for Madonna, who went number one with the track ?Justify
My Love?.

What should have been a wonderful time in his life for Kravitz
quickly turned sour as he and wife Lisa divorced in the early ?90s.
Kravitz heartbreak was reflected heavily in his second album ?Mama
Said? which turned out to be even stronger than his debut album. ?Mama
Said? was highlighted by the Led Zeppelin-like funk rocker ?Always on
the Run?, a collaboration with Guns N? Roses guitarist, Slash. The
Curtis Mayfield-esque soul ballad ?It Ain?t Over ?Til It?s Over?
confirmed that Kravitz's success was no fluke.
The best was still yet to come for Kravitz in his third release
overall, 1993's ?Are You Gonna Go My Way?, is often considered to be
the best album front to back of his entire caree. Every single song
was a winner, including the up-tempo anthemic title track, which
turned out to be one of MTV's most played videos for that year. The
album was an enormous hit and Kravitz became an arena headliner, as
well as being featured on numerous magazine covers.
Kravitz's fourth release, ?Circus?, came off sounding unfocused and
was a major letdown compared to his stellar previous few releases,
despite an almost two-year gap between albums. Maybe sensing that he
needed to mix things up musically, Kravitz dabbled with electronics
and trip-hop loops for his next album, 1998's ?5?. Although it wasn?t
a huge hit in the beginning, the album proved to have an long chart
life, spawning the biggest hit of Kravitz's career, "Fly Away," almost
a year after its original release. With the single's success, Virgin
decided to cash in on the album's sudden rediscovery by reissuing it
around the same time with a couple of extra added bonus tracks. One
became another successful hit single, a remake of the Guess Who's
"American Woman", which was played in the hit 1999 comedy movie Austin
Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Kravitz's first best-of set, the
15-track Greatest Hits, was issued in 2000, while his sixth studio
release overall, ?Lenny?, was issued the next year. In addition to his
own work, Kravitz continues to write songs for other artists. His
songs have appeared on albums by such rock stars as Aerosmith and Mick
Jagger, while he produced and wrote the majority of Vanessa Paradis'
obscure self-titled 1992 release.
