About KC Royals
Long before the 2004 KC Royals concluded a 104-loss season, the battle
plan was being drawn up for 2005. Royals? General manager Allard Baird
swung a late June deal for prized center fielder Carlos Beltran,
bringing in young players that could have an impact next season. KC
Royals? catcher John Buck and starting pitcher Mike Wood immediately
became regular fixtures. David DeJesus was installed as Beltran's
replacement and the sifting through of other minor leaguers who might
help the KC Royals was an on-going process. More trades were made. The
rebuilding process continued apace.

After opening the season with a 4-2 home stand, the KC Royals went
to Chicago and Minnesota and lost all six games. That set the tone
for things to come and by May 23, the Royals were 13-28 and sucking
air.
KC Royals? Manager Tony Pena labored over a new plan for Spring
Training that would emphasize fundamentals, basics that somehow
vaporized as the season went along.
This was a Royals club that was supposed to contend after a
surprising 2003 season revitalized the game in Kansas City. The KC
Royals quickly flat-lined amid an incredible avalanche of injuries
and subpar performances. A gamble on slugging right fielder Juan
Gonzalez didn't pay off for the KC Royals; he played 33 games and
faded away with a back injury. Various ailments struck, among
others, first basemen Mike Sweeney and Ken Harvey, catcher Benito
Santiago, shortstop Angel Berroa, second baseman Tony Graffanino,
left fielder Aaron Guiel, and pitchers Mike MacDougal, Kevin Appier,
Jeremy Affeldt and Scott Sullivan.
The KC Royals were bottom-feeders in batting, pitching and fielding
as shown in the team statistics.
KC Royals biggest need: More home run power is needed in the middle
of the lineup. Even though the fences at Kauffman Stadium were moved
back last season to better fit the Royals, they still need someone
to splash the fountains once in a while. Aside from Sweeney, that
capability is absent on the KC Royals. Finding a big stick for third
base or left field seems essential.
KC Royals Record: 58-104, last in AL Central
