About The Jets
Harry Wismer sold his bankrupt franchise the New York Titans (one of
the AFL's charter franchises) to a five-man group headed by David
"Sonny" Werblin for $1,000,000 in February of 1963. Soon after the
transaction, the "new" team the changed their name to the New York
Jets and Weeb Ewbank was chosen to be the coach.
The three-year reign of Wismer had been fraught with controversy, but
their primary problem was at the box office where they were a
disaster. That problem was immediately addressed by a decision to move
the New York Jets from the antiquated Polo Grounds to a brand-new Shea
Stadium in 1964 (the Jets later moved to the Meadowlands in New Jersey
in 1984).
Ewbank began a building program with the Jets and Werblin signed
Alabama quarterback Joe Namath on January 2, 1965. The signing of the
highly-regarded Namath proved to be a major factor in the eventual end
of the AFL-NFL war that raged in the 1960's.

The 1968 season was the high-water mark for the New York Jets and
the AFL. Led by Ewbank and guided by players like Namath and Don
Maynard, the Jets raced to the AFL East title with an 11-3 record.
The New York Jets then defeated the Oakland Raiders, 27-23, in the
AFL championship. In Super Bowl III, the Jets stunned the entire
sports world with a 16-7 victory over the overwhelmingly-favored
Baltimore Colts. It is considered to be one of the most pivotal
games ever in helping build a fan base for football. The New York
Jets won the AFL East again in 1969 but lost to Kansas City in a
first-round playoff game. They did not seriously challenge for a
divisional championship for another 12 years.
In the 1980's, the Jets made the playoffs five times (1981, 1982,
1985, 1986 and 1991). In both 1981 and 1986, when they won their
first-round playoff games before losing. In the strike-shortened
1982 season, the Jets advanced to the AFC championship game, but
lost to Miami, 14-0.
Herman Edwards was named the Jets' 13th full-time head coach on
January 18, 2001. Edwards? 2001 Jets led the NFL in turnover
differential with a +18, a margin of one over their closest rival.
The Jets produced the second most take-aways (39) in the AFC and
tied with the Bucs for second most in the NFL behind Cleveland?s 42.
The Jets also proved to be frugal in turning the ball over,
relinquishing it just 21 times all season, tied for the fewest in
the AFC with Seattle and Pittsburgh and trailing only San
Francisco?s 19 in the NFL.
In Edwards? first season with the Jets in 2001, he oversaw the
implementation of new offensive, defensive and special teams
philosophies. Edwards kept a forceful hand on the controls and
guided the Jets to their first playoff appearance since 1998.
The Jets? 2002 AFC East title was a product of the team winning
seven of the last nine regular season games; three of the last four;
eight of the last ten and four in a row at home. In addition, the
New York Jets? 41-0 playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts in the
postseason was the first playoff shutout in Club history and marked
the second most points scored in a shutout win in NFL annals, while
the 41 points scored were the second most in Jets? team history in a
playoff game.
In 2003, the New York Jets were forced to deal with a major setback
when star quarterback, and unquestioned team leader, Chad Pennington
suffered a broken wrist that sidelined him for the first half of the
season. The New York Jets struggled to find their rhythm in the
early portion of the season and fell behind the pack in the AFC
East. However, under Edwards? guidance, the Jets rallied in the
second half of the season and climbed into contention. In December,
the New York Jets shifted gears and convincingly defeated one of the
NFL?s hottest teams, the Tennessee Titans, in an emotionally charged
Monday Night game at The Meadowlands, 24-17.
