About The Indians
The 2004 Cleveland Indians had their sights on the playoffs. Suddenly,
an Aug. 14 loss to the Twins in ten innings turned the Indians? season
topsy-turvy. On that date, the Cleveland Indians lost a chance to tie
the Twins for first place. Its inability to hold on sent the '04
season into a tailspin.
So what happened to the Indians? The hitting went ice cold and
Indians? leadoff hitter Matt Lawton went cold in particular. And the
Indians? pitching went colder. That led to some ugly baseball, and
some Indians? losses to a couple of pitchers that, well, shouldn't be
making a handsome living in major league baseball. Still, the Indians
and manager Eric Wedge showed promise of good things ahead. They both
matured as the season wore on. They both should be ready for more
consistent performances next season, when the Indians have promised to
contend.

Its promise is not without pitfalls, for it's built around the
Indians team having to fill some holes in a roster that is still
young and inexperienced. But that young roster got better game after
game in 2004, which is why Indians officials feel so optimistic
about the future.
Cleveland Indians 2004 Record: 80-82, third in AL Central.
Cleveland Indians 2004 turning point: The decision in May to move
Indians? catcher Victor Martinez into the cleanup hitter's spot.
Indians? skipper Eric Wedge made the move after much soul-searching,
and he and others still wondered aloud about Martinez's ability to
handle the job. Martinez put those thoughts to rest quickly, for he
hit from the start. His bat solidified the middle of the Indians
order and helped turn the Tribe into an offensive juggernaut.
Cleveland Indians 2004 bright spot: Travis Hafner, only a step above
a rookie in experience, led an Indians offense that was the surprise
of baseball. He hit the ball hard from the season's start, and
emerged as the No. 1 designated hitter in the American League.
Hafner's bat helped form the centerpiece at the heart of the
Indians? order, and Hafner and Martinez should be big run producers
in the seasons ahead for the Tribe.
