About Independence Bowl

The Independence Bowl can trace its roots back to 1975 when the board of directors of the Shreveport-Bossier City Sports Foundation conceived the idea of bringing a postseason football game to northwest Louisiana. Applying to the National Collegiate Athletic Association for certification, the group?s efforts were rewarded with the approval of a December 13, 1976 game.

In honor of the United States? 200th anniversary, and the strong military presence in the Shreveport-Bossier City area, the Sports Foundation?s board of directors felt that the name ?Independence Bowl? would be a fitting tribute to the men and women who have fought for the United States? freedom and independence.

The 28th Independence Bowl was a match up two teams with eight wins each, for the first time since 1993. Arkansas got on the board first with a 33 yard field goal by Chris Balseiro, who went on to kick three more on the night for an Independence Bowl record. But Missouri fought back and went on top 7-3 on a Zack Abron 1 yard touchdown run. In the second quarter Balseiro added another 3-pointer, and Matt Jones and Cedric Cobbs each ran it in the end zone to put the Razorbacks up 21-7 at the half. Balseiro added his third field goal on the night in the third, and Missouri finally got back on the board with a Brad Smith rushing touchdown, putting the score at 24-14 going into the fourth quarter. Balseiro?s 24-yard field goal proved to be the only points scored in the fourth, giving Arkansas the 27-14 win.
