About The Dolphins
No pro football team has graduated from the ranks of first-year loser
to ultimate winner as quickly as the Miami Dolphins. In 1967, the
Dolphins (founded by Joseph Robbie in 1967) became the ninth member of
the AFL. Only six years later, Miami became the only NFL team in NFL
history (still today) to have a perfect season. In 1972, the Dolphins
won the AFC East, the AFC championship and Super Bowl VII, where they
defeated the Washington Redskins, 14-7. Including the playoffs, the
Dolphins were a perfect 17-0.
George Wilson was the Dolphins' first coach. He finished his four-year
AFL tenure after the 1969 season with a 15-39-2 record. The transition
from losing to winning came in just one season. In 1970, new coach Don
Shula led the Dolphins to a 10-4 record and to an AFC wild-card spot.
Miami then followed with three straight AFC championships and
victories in Super Bowls VII and VIII. Their combined 1972-1973 record
was 32-2, the best two-season record in history. From 1970 to 1974,
their cumulative record was an incredible 65-15-1.

There is no telling how long the Dolphins' run might have lasted had
not three of their stars?Csonka, Jim Kiick and Paul
Warfield?defected to the World Football League after the 1974
season. Although Miami never again reached the level the Dolphins
attained in 1972 and 1973, Shula kept the Dolphins among the
league's elite year after year. In 1993, coach Shula surpassed
George Halas' record of 324 coaching victories.
Since 1970, the Dolphins won 11 AFC East titles and five AFC
championships, the last two coming in 1982 and 1984. In 1984,
quarterback Dan Marino tossed 48 touchdowns, an all-time record.
Since 1970, Miami has had only two losing seasons, in 1976 and 1988.
Early in 1994, the NFL approved the acquisition of the Dolphins by
H. Wayne Huizenga. (The Dolphins' original owner, Joe Robbie, died
in January 1990.) Following the 1995 season, the legendary Don Shula
retired. He was succeeded by former Cowboys' coach Jimmy Johnson.
Dave Wannstedt was named Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins on January
16, 2000. He became the fourth head coach in club history, joining
Jimmy Johnson (1996-99), Don Shula (1970-95), and George Wilson
(1966-69).
Wannstedt?s reputation as an outstanding defensive coach was
underlined in 2000 as the Dolphins finished third in the NFL in
defensive points allowed, giving up a total of 226 points, the
fewest ever allowed by a Dolphins team in a 16-game season. Under
Wannstedt, the Dolphins also recorded an NFL high 28 interceptions,
and their plus-15 takeaway/giveaway ratio was the best by a Dolphins
team since 1983. Overall, it was the fourth best mark in franchise
history.
In 2000, the Miami Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the AFC East
championship and the first division title by the Dolphins since
1994. The Dolphins? 11-5 record was the team?s best mark since 1992.
In addition, with the Dolphins having gone 9-7 in 1999, the two-game
improvement under coach Wannstedt in 2000 was Miami?s largest since
the team went 11-5 in 1992 after going 8-8 the previous year. As a
measure of the team?s success in 2000, the Dolphins sent seven
players to the Pro Bowl, the most since 1984, when the team advanced
to the Super Bowl.
The Miami Dolphins finished 2001 with an 11-5 record and a berth in
the NFL playoffs as an AFC Wild Card representative. It marked the
second time in Wannstedt?s first two seasons at the Dolphins? helm
that he took the team to the playoffs, and the Dolphins were one of
only three teams in the AFC to make a repeat performance in
postseason play. In addition, coupled with his 11-5 mark in 2000,
Wannstedt?s two-year regular season record of 22-10 was tied for the
second best record among NFL coaches over that two-year span. By
guiding the Dolphins to at least ten wins in each of those two
years, it marked the first time Miami put together back-to-back ten
win seasons since the 1984-85 campaigns.
The 2002 Miami Dolphins season posted a 9-7 record. Along the way,
the Dolphins produced seven Pro Bowl players, including six on
defense. The Dolphins? defense was ranked third in the NFL, allowing
just 291.0 yards per game. Offensively, the Dolphins ranked second
in the NFL in rushing, the team?s highest ranking in that category
since they finished first in 1972.
The 2003 Miami Dolphins finished 10-6, marking the fourth straight
season that the Dolphins won at least nine games. The team went 4-2
in the AFC East and was 6-2 on the road. In addition, the Dolphins
finished strongly, winning five of their last seven games. The
Dolphins defense finished third in the league in points allowed per
game (16.3 points per game), and permitted the second fewest rushing
yards (1,452) over a full season in team history. In addition, the
Dolphins were the only defense in the NFL not to allow a 100-yard
rusher all season. Offensively, Ricky Williams rushed for the second
highest single season total in club history, while Chris Chambers
became the first Miami Dolphin receiver to record 10 or more
touchdown catches in a season in more than a decade.
