About Denver Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets franchise traces its origins to 1967-68 in the American Basketball Association. The team?s original name was the Denver Rockets. A stable ABA franchise for nine years, Denver carried its winning ways into the NBA when the two leagues merged in 1976.
The team was renamed the Nuggets for the 1974-75 season, with new uniforms and a new roster. Suddenly the Denver Nuggets went from being one of the worst teams in basketball to the best team in the ABA, finishing at 65-19. The Nuggets defeated Utah in the first round of the playoffs but fell in seven games to Indiana in the Western Division Finals. Larry Brown was named ABA Coach of the Year, and Bobby Jones made both the All-Rookie Team and the All-Defensive Team. Mack Calvin also had a sensational season, averaging 19.5 points.
While the Denver Nuggets were flourishing, most ABA franchises were floundering. In June 1976 the league went out of business, and the Nuggets, Nets, San Antonio Spurs, and Indiana Pacers became part of the NBA after paying $3.2-million entry fees. Denver had stormed onto the NBA scene in more ways than one. The Nuggets led the league in attendance, averaging 17,150 fans per game. David Thompson ranked fourth in the NBA with a team-high 25.9 points per game, and Dan Issel added 22.3 points per contest. Slender 6-9 forward Bobby Jones was named to the NBA All-Defensive Team after having received the same honor the previous two years in the ABA.
In 1984-85 the Denver Nuggets arrested the previous season's slide and turned in a stellar season. Everything fell into place for Denver as they finished 52-30 and contended for the Western Conference title. The Nuggets momentum in the second half of the season carried over into the playoffs. Denver met San Antonio in the first round and engaged the Spurs in a postseason shootout for the second time in three seasons. This time the Nuggets prevailed, winning the best-of-five series in five games. Denver had an easier time in the conference semifinals, trouncing the Utah Jazz, four games to one. Their reward, however, was a match up with the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers bounced the Nuggets in five high-scoring games on their way to the NBA title.

The Denver Nuggets? fortunes declined in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and they failed to make the postseason for three consecutive years, starting in 1990-91. Before the 1991-92 season, Denver drafted center Dikembe Mutombo, an outstanding shot-blocker. Issel returned to coach the Nuggets before the 1992-93 season, and a year later the Nuggets bested the heavily favored Seattle SuperSonics in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the Utah Jazz. Issel resigned during the 1994-95 season, and a series of coaches followed. Denver's roster also underwent several changes over the next few years, including Mutombo?s departure after the 1995-96 season, when he signed with the Atlanta Hawks. Issel resumed his coaching duties for the 1999-2000 season.
In 2003 the revamped Denver Nuggets lineup included first round pick [3rd pick overall] Carmello Anthony from Syracuse. Anthony?s stellar play as a rookie opened the eyes of the league and led the Denver to their first playoff birth since 1995. The Nuggets, sliding into the playoffs as the #8 seed, faced a powerful and #1 seeded Minnesota Timberwolves team and were eliminated in 5 games.
During the Denver Nuggets' season-ending loss to Minnesota in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series, center Marcus Camby kept up the same refrain as Denver trimmed the Timberwolves' lead from 26 points to six: "We ain't going away!"
Whether Camby or the team's seven other potential free agents feel the same way this summer is one of many difficult questions general manager Kiki Vandeweghe must deal with.
He also must compile a list of eight players to protect by June 12 for the June 22 expansion draft, figure out whom he wants with the 20th pick in the NBA draft June 24 and woo other teams' free agents, as well as his own. Furthermore, the Denver Nuggets must decide if they will retain head coach Jeff Bzdelik, whose future remains uncertain despite Denver's 26-win improvement from 2002-03.
