About The Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are currently one of three teams, which have won 5 Super Bowls, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers. The Cowboys currently home venue is Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas. After 30 years in Texas stadium and with other NFL teams getting new stadiums, Cowboys stadium is being constructed in Arlington, Texas. With the expansion and popularity of the National Football League (NFL), new stadiums for teams have become a necessity due to the increase in fans. The new stadium is projected to be complete in 2009.
Every one knows that the Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful teams in the NFL. Since the Super Bowl 1 in 1966 the cowboys have the best winning percentage in the league with 327 wins against 183 losses which is one reason they have been given the tag of "America's Team".
History The Dallas Cowboys
When Clint Murchison Jr. rallied for a franchise in Dallas he knew he would meet with opposition from the Washington Redskins because at the time they were the only team that represented the south and they didn't want to give up that honor.
Clint knew he had to play dirty so he bought the rights to the Redskins fight song "Hail to the Redskins" and threatened not to let them play that song unless he would be allowed to get a franchise in Dallas.
On January 28, 1960 Dallas got a franchise and the Redskins got their song back at which time a fierce rivalry began and continues to this day.
In the Cowboys first year, Tom Laundry was hired as the head coach and would remain the head coach until 1989. The season ended with zero wins and eleven losses and one tie. The following year they drafted Bob Lilly and they seen their first victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers 27 to 24
The early 60's Dallas used to gather players like quarterback "Dandy" Don Meredith and running back Don Perkins. It wasn't until 1966 when the Cowboys had a winning season ten wins, three losses and one tie.
This sparked an amazing twenty season winning streak, something no other NFL team has been able to duplicate.
By the beginning of the 70's while the NFL was merging with the AFL the Cowboys were making changes of their own. Meredith and Perkins retired in '69 but Dallas picked up Cliff Harris, Lee Roy Jordan, Rayfield Wright, Dan Reeves and Pro Football Hall of Famers Mike Ditka, and Roger Staubach.
Quarterback Craig Morton guided the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl against the Baltimore Colts which they lost 16 to 13. But no matter the following year led by Roger Staubach the cowboys were again in the Super Bowl and beat the Miami Dolphins 24 to 3
They continued their winning streak until 1974 when it was the first time in eight years they didn't make the playoffs. The following years draft of Randy White and Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson sparked the Cowboys and found themselves once more playing in the Super Bowl but lost to the Steelers 21 to 17.
But that didn't stop them, two season later in Super Bowl XII they creamed the Denver Broncos 27 to10. By the end of the 70's and beginning of the 80's Dallas's reign on the NFL was coming to a close. The dominating team was switching from Dallas to the 49ers.
