About The Buccaneers
NFL's 27th franchise was awarded to Florida tax lawyer Hugh
Culverhouse in 1974 to begin play two years later as the Tampa Bay .
John McKay was hired to be the first coach of the Buccaneers after
coaching at the University of Southern California and winning four
national championships in 16 years.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got off to a slow start in the NFL that saw
them lose a league-record 26 consecutive games before the Bucs finally
won their first game on December 11, 1977. Two years later, the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers reached the 1979 NFC championship game in just their
fourth season. After defeating Philadelphia, 24-17, early in the
playoffs, the Buccaneers lost the NFC Championship to the Los Angeles
Rams in a hard-fought, 9-0 game.
One of the hallmarks of Tampa Bay's early success was an excellent
defense led by Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon, the
Buccaneers' first draft choice and the Number 1 pick in the 1976
draft. In his nine-year career, Selmon was named to the Pro Bowl six
times and was selected as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in
1979.

In 1981, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished 9-7 and won the NFC
Central division for the second time. As had been the case in 1979,
the Buccaneers needed a dramatic, final-week win to clinch the
division. After qualifying for the playoffs for the third time in
four years in the strike-shortened 1982 season, the Buccaneers hit
an extended dry run.
After nine years as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McKay
retired following the 1984 season. In the years since McKay's
departure, Leeman Bennett, Ray Perkins, Richard Williamson and Sam
Wyche all have served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach. Their
cumulative record in the first nine post-McKay years was 37-106-0, a
.259 winning percentage.
Tony Dungy became head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1996.
Dungy coached the Buccaneers from 1996-2001, compiling a 54-42
regular season record and earning four playoff appearances in six
seasons. In the 10 seasons before Dungy?s arrival, the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers were 43-111 with nine double-digit loss seasons. In 1997,
after guiding the Buccaneers to a 10-6 record and a wild card
playoff victory over Detroit, Dungy was named Professional Coach of
the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Under Dungy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the NFC Central in 1999,
their first division championship in 18 seasons (1981) and then the
third in franchise history (1979, 1981). Also that season, the
Buccaneers came within a late drive of playing in the Super Bowl,
losing to eventual champion St. Louis, 11-6. Tampa Bay was one of
only two teams in 1999 to hold the Rams under 15 points. During
Dungy?s tenure, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quickly developed into one
of the NFL?s stingiest defenses. In 2001, the Buccaneers were one of
two teams to hold the Rams below 20 points. The Buccaneers finished
sixth in the NFL in total defense and were eighth in the league in
points allowed with 280. In 2000, the club set a team record with 55
sacks.
John Gruden was named the seventh head coach in Tampa Bay Buccaneers
history on February 18, 2002 after leading the Oakland Raiders to
division titles in each of the final two seasons (2000-01). Jon
Gruden stood in front of a standing-room only crowd at a downtown
Tampa hotel on February 20, 2002, the day he was officially
introduced as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. ?I?m thrilled
to be here, and all I can guarantee is a lot of hard work and effort
to try to put the Buccaneers into championship form,? Gruden said
that day. Less than 11 months later, Gruden had more than delivered
on his promise. Tampa Bay had claimed its first NFL title with a
48-21 victory over Oakland in Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego on
January 26, 2003. The Buccaneers, who were making their first
appearance in the NFL?s championship game, also claimed the
first-ever NFC South title in 2002, just the fourth division crown
in team history.
Over that period, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers established a club record
for victories in a regular season with 12 wins, breaking the
previous mark of 11 in 1999, and their 15 overall wins were the most
for a Buccaneers club in the then 27-year history of the franchise.
In addition, Gruden became the youngest head coach in NFL history to
win a Super Bowl and was also the first non-rookie head coach in the
history of the NFL to lead his team to the Super Bowl in his first
season with a new team.
