About The Brewers
It figures to be an off season of change for the Milwaukee Brewers. In
other words, business as usual. Two years ago, Brewers? general
manager Doug Melvin, assistant GM Gord Ash and manager Ned Yost
arrived in the biggest organizational shakeup in the Milwaukee
Brewers? history. Last year, Brewers? president and CEO Ulice Payne
exited amid plans to reduce payroll.
The Milwaukee Brewers introduced New York investment banker Mark
Attanasio as the new owner. The team cancelled its annual "State of
the Brewers" press conference, usually held the day after the end of
the season. Attanasio will require approval by Major League Baseball's
other owners, a process that could take weeks or months. In the
meantime, Melvin and Ash will continue to prepare the Milwaukee
Brewers for 2005.

"We want to review the whole ball club, from our minor leagues to
our scouting," said Melvin, who joined the Milwaukee Brewers in St.
Louis for the final series of the season. "We didn't have a good
year in the minor leagues, so there are areas that we have to look
at."
It was a difficult season in the Major Leagues as well. The
Milwaukee Brewers were a surprising four games over .500 in the
first half only to fall off after the All-Star break. With Sunday's
loss at St. Louis, the final record was 67-94, the Brewers' 12th
consecutive losing season.
The Milwaukee Brewers did produce some highlights. Lyle Overbay led
the Majors with 53 doubles and went 2-for-3 in his final game of the
year to boost his average above .300. Scott Podsednik set a Brewers
club record with 70 stolen bases, Dan Kolb set a franchise record
with 39 saves and Ben Sheets set a Brewers franchise record with 264
strikeouts.
The Milwaukee Brewers organization is looking to do the same.
Organizational meetings began in the first week of September, when
Melvin and Ash met with Brewers? scouting director Jack Zduriencik,
Brewers? farm director Reid Nichols and special assistant Dick Groch
with two full days of meetings before the start of instructional
league play in Arizona.
The group was back in during the last week of the season, where
Melvin and Ash were meeting with the Brewers' professional scouts.
Melvin planned to go back to Arizona in two weeks for four more days
of meetings with national cross checkers.
All that time in the boardroom should prepare the baseball
operations side of the ball club for the official change in Brewers?
ownership and the all-important budget meetings, which will
determine 2005 payroll. The Brewers drew two million fans this
season, way above expectations, and will reap significant income
from Major League Baseball's revenue sharing setup.
With those boosts in revenue, plus a new owner with deep pockets,
does Melvin expect a significant bump in payroll? Milwaukee Brewers
fans will be watching.
